What is floatation REST?
REST is an acronym which stands for Restricted Environmental Stimulation Technique, in short, all input to your senses are significantly reduced. Additionally, the environment is structured in a manner that engenders physical and emotional support in order that deep relaxation can occur. Originally developed by John Lilly MD as a tool to examine the effects of sensory restriction on healthy persons, floatation REST has evolved into a technique that allows individuals to release stress, explore their personal inner space and to strengthen or regain physical, mental and spiritual balance.
What is the floatation tank like?
The floatation tank is .basically a large box filled with 9-10 inches of water in which 200 lbs. of Epsom salts are dissolved. This makes for a very buoyant solution, where you can float like a; cork, effortlessly. The Water is heated to 94 C, which is near skin temperature. It is light-proof (you have the option of turning a light on) and, since your ears are beneath the water, the only sounds you hear are your own body's and an occasional low frequency vibration (such as a bus going by). There is an air circulator so you can breathe comfortably, and the door is light enough to open with one finger allowing you to exit easily at any time. Additionally, the tank has audio capability, so you can play a self-help tape or listen to your favorite music.
What if I am claustrophobic?
A Some people experience anxiety at the idea of entering the tank. However, the tank, offering a nurturing and supportive environment, has been useful in helping individuals overcome claustrophobia. It has also been identified as a resource in alleviating depression, anxiety, phobic reactions, easing chemical withdrawal, and treating other psychological and emotional conditions. If, however, you become uncomfortable, we can assist you through our 2-way intercom system, or you can end your session whenever you like.
Can I get AIDS or other diseases?
The tank is a very sterile environment where few micro-organisms can survive. Viruses like HIV are very vulnerable outside of the body and can not survive in the tank. The water is tested regularly and antiseptics such as bromine may be added minimally. Additionally, the high salinity level coupled with regular filtration and UV sterilization insure a high level of water purity.
Can floating help (my) medical condition?
A Research in clinical and hospital settings has shown floatation to be a powerful tool in treating high blood pressure, muscular, neurological, endocrine and other stress related disorders. Other findings indicate that floatation significantly increases the production of endorphins, the body's natural "feel good" hormones. In this regard the tank is being used to treat depression and bring relief to individuals who suffer with chronic pain.
Will floating complement other treatment modalities?
Many clinics, health care professionals and their clients have found flotation to be an invaluable adjunct to various treatment modalities. Often the effects of a treatment can be amplified, and the healing accelerated, when the tank is used in tandem. If you float before, you may be more receptive to the treatment, if you float after, you may experience a deeper float.
Will I experience altered states?
Although you probably will not find yourself experiencing Hollywood's version of inner realities, floaters often report states of expanded awareness and inner peace. Meditators, body- workers and others involved in spiritual, creative and service disciplines may find their practices and sensitivities enhanced.
What can I expect when I float?
Usually, the first session or two is a period of adjusting to this unique environment, however, most people experience a state of deep physical and mental relaxation in subsequent sessions, one may relax quicker, deeper and more completely, and begin to experience aspects of oneself which can be both interesting and useful. Each floatation session may be as different and unique as the individuals who experience them.
What should I bring with me?
Bring a towel and any special soap, shampoo or body care products you are accustomed to. You can bring your swim suit if you feel more comfortable, however the rooms are private so you can float without restrictive clothing.
